This was our first season at 11-a-side so we decided to play in a 1-3-5-2 formation. We agreed on this formation following a review of our players taking into account both their strengths and weaknesses.
Our strategy was to utilise our fast and fit wingback players and to play into wide areas as much as possible. We knew that the teams in the league would play with a low compact block so we wanted to look to play around them. The team did this well overall.
Our main focus in training was by using the 5 lanes for reference for both in and out of possession. 5 lanes when in possession and compact into 3 lanes when out of possession.
The players quickly learnt, understood and implemented this into our matches. We also heavily focused on in-game communication's and scanning to help them make the correct decisions. This is an area in which we have improved a lot.
The players have also become more competitive and have a greater drive to press and win the ball back.
We were clearly in the wrong league for our level so we will move to a higher standard league for next season.
